Internet marketing spend in Australia for 2004

The latest annual report from the Audit Bureau of Verification Services (ABVS) records Internet marketing spend in 2004. This shows a bigger annual growth rate this year, with total spend reaching AU$388m, up 68% on the 2003 level.

This continuing confidence in placing more spend in the Internet marketing sector is being driven by financial advertisers within general advertising and recruitment advertisers within the classifieds sector. The share of total spend during the year was 33% in General Advertising (such as banner adverts, email or affiliate marketing), 34% in Classified Advertising and 33% in Search & Directories Advertising. This latter category saw the biggest growth rate, with total spend up to AU$127.5m, up an impressive 85% on 2003.

The annual Online Advertising Expenditure Report from ABVS is based on information provided by a number of leading publishers and portals in the country. The report contains half yearly and quarterly analysis with a 2003 comparison, plus the report also includes additional data about spend within industry categories attracting general revenue as well as reporting trends in classifieds revenue.
